My Tax My Voice: How Migori Citizens Are Demanding Accountability for Devolved Funds
Public money is collected in every ward of Migori County — but how often do ordinary citizens get to see where it goes? MCYF’s My Tax My Voice initiative, supported by HIVOS through the Voice Kenya programme, is changing that by building a culture of civic accountability from the ground up.
Through community-level forums, radio engagements, and ward-based public participation sessions, MCYF has trained hundreds of community members to track devolved fund allocations, attend county budget hearings, and submit formal feedback to their elected representatives.

- Civic education on how devolution works and what citizens are entitled to
- Budget literacy training — understanding how to read public finance documents

- Documentation and submission of community feedback to the County Assembly
Results on the Ground
In one documented case, a community forum in Suna East facilitated through My Tax My Voice identified an undisbursed ward development fund allocation. Following engagement with the ward representative, the funds were released and applied to a water kiosk project that had stalled for two years.
Governance is not a spectator sport. MCYF believes every young person and community member has both the right and the responsibility to participate in decisions that shape their lives.
