Greening Migori: MCYF Youth Groups Lead Tree Planting and Waste Management Drives
Across Migori County, MCYF’s network of 1,325+ village youth bunges is turning environmental awareness into action — one tree, one ward at a time. In the past year alone, MCYF-coordinated groups have planted thousands of trees across degraded riparian zones, school compounds, and community land.
The initiative is part of MCYF’s broader environmental sustainability pillar, which also includes community recycling campaigns, waste segregation sensitisation, and disaster preparedness training for communities in flood-prone areas along the Migori River basin.
Why It Matters for Migori
Migori County faces real environmental pressure: deforestation along riverbanks, plastic waste accumulation in market centres, and increasingly unpredictable rainfall that threatens small-scale farmers. Youth groups are on the frontline of both the problem and the solution.
“We started with 50 seedlings and a weekend. Now our group has planted over 800 trees in two seasons,” said a youth bunge leader from Kuria West. “Other groups are doing the same. It adds up.”
Climate Advocacy Beyond Planting
MCYF also advocates for climate-responsive policies at county level, linking grassroots environmental action to the Migori County Integrated Development Plan. We have submitted memoranda on clean energy access, waste management bylaws, and the inclusion of youth in county environment committees.
If your group wants to participate in an upcoming planting drive or waste management campaign, reach out through our contact page. All MCYF member groups are welcome.
